Our spring chapter meeting will take place at the University of San Diego this Saturday, May 31. Registration and breakfast will begin at 8:30, and our first session is at 9:00.
USD’s address is 5998 Alcalá Park, San Diego, CA 92110 and the conference will take place at Mother’s Rosalie Hill Hall, in the Executive Classroom. MRHH is at the top of the hill using the Marian Way entrance, which is the West part of campus.
Guests can park anywhere on the street or in the garage under the building, it’s always free to visitors on the weekends.
Presentations will be on a wide range of topics, including: Parish band music in 19th-century Philippines; a Passion from the German baroque; visual representation of music in eighteenth-century Korean painting; Captain Beefheart as outsider art; a more general theory of outsider music; Janis Joplin and gender norms in rock; exoticism in the music of the 20th-century Mexican composer Manuel Ponce; Classical references in K-Pop music; opera for babies; Shakespeare’s musical comedies; and an auto-ethnographic analysis of cumbia music performances in the United States.
