2025 Dahl Award

Our May meeting at the University of San Diego included a lively Dahl competition, with seven presentations by students from six different institutions. We learned about Janis Joplin, the Mexican composer Manuel Ponce, classical music samples in K-Pop, Shakespeare’s musical comedies, outsider music, and Cumbia. Thanks to all who competed and shared this exciting work.

The Ingolf Dahl award for best student paper went to Molly Hennig of UCLA for her presentation “Redoing Opera Through the Ears of Babes: NOOMA (2009) and BambinO (2017).” In this paper she showed how opera companies have transformed the medium to suit infant audiences, especially to accommodate this young demographic’s desire to remain mobile and interact during the performance—but also considered how adult caregivers might experience the same opera through their own eyes, and vicariously through their children. Well done, Molly!

Molly’s name has been added to the illustrious list of Dahl winners dating back to 1971. Click the link in the menu above to read them all.
